"I don't have time"

This morning I was mopping the kitchen floor when I overheard an interesting conversation.

Kaylee asked for Joshua to help move something and he responded, "No Kaylee. I don't have time for that. I'm on my rocking horse." She asked one more time, but got the same exact response. I don't have time for that.

My initial thought was, "Whoa there buddy! You are 3 years old. You have all the time in the world."

Immediately, my next thought was "How many times have I said that to him or implied it with my actions?" That exact phrase is generally used for situations when we are literally running out the door to go someplace. (not when I'm doing my version of "rocking on a horse")

It made me pause and rethink my words. Rethink my actions. Remember my priorities. I put down the mop and walked over to help Kaylee. It only took 2 seconds.

Thinking back, I normally say "Can you wait?" or "Hold on a minute". Perhaps I should reprioritize as well. We can always "make" time for something.

I've had this same thought myself. I set up a pretty rigid schedule for our day (I feel it's for survival) but I do make a big effort to say my phrases only when I really need to.

Mine are:

Sorry, not right now.

Ask me again when I've finished (fill in the blank). This one puts the responsibility on the kid and I don't feel like I'm breaking promises if I forget.

Great post...and so true. Sometimes my boys say something and I'll think "where in the world did they pick up that phrase?" only to, of course, realize that it's from me.
