I need decorating help...please....pretty please.

My living room has a very plain fireplace mantle. I don't even know how to start decorating it. Well, actually, I'm fond of that black circle scrolly thing. I really like it. I even spray painted it black. I just don't know what else to do up there. The ledge is really narrow. I would like to put up black and white photos of the kids on the mantle or even up on the wall.

A couple silver frames...
A couple black frames...
A bunch of black frames...

I'm not happy with those arrangements. What am I doing wrong? Do I need bigger frames? Should I scrap the scrolly thing? Any suggestions? I promise to try it out and then post pictures.

Hi Amy Jo

I'm not much of a decorator myself, but I have found a lot of inspiration in a blog that I love visiting. The address is: http://mthopeacademy.blogspot.com/.
Heidi, the author of this blog, is so creative and she has just recently (in a post dated, April 5, titled ooh, la, la) written an entry on what she's done with her own mantle. She has fantastic ideas which you could adpat to suit your own home. I can't recommend her blog highly enough (I hope Heidi doesn't mind me doing so)

I realize I'm a month behind by commenting on this post, so you probably already solved your decorating problem, but my fireplace mantel looks similar to yours, so I thought I'd chime in.

Maybe you already saw the post I did about it on my blog, but we added an "overmantel" above ours with trim to frame in the empty space (it's the post called "Crown Molding Magic" if you want to see the photos). Then we hung a round mirror above the mantel. I've got two big candlesticks on one side and a vase with flowers on the left side of the mirror. I think it worked pretty well.

I like your black scrolly thing and think you can make it work. You just need something with more height on either side of it.

Hope that gives you some more ideas! Now I'm off to check out that blog e and t mentioned! -Julia :-)
